HISTOGRAM

* * *

Another way to check if you have the correct metering or exposure is to use your histogram display on the camera’s LCD screen. This can give you a good indication if you have over- or underexposed any fine details in either your shadows or highlight areas. Using the histogram can be a useful tool, but it is important not to let it get in the way of taking images. For example, we might intentionally shoot chiaroscuro-lit images that would have no detail in the shadow areas by design. In this case looking at the camera’s histogram would not be that useful. The histogram is best used to confirm no ‘clipping’ of the highlights or shadows has occurred. But I do not place much more importance on it unless I am trying to do something specific with my exposure. Histograms can be helpful as another confirmation check for your exposure or in situations where the lighting makes it difficult to see the LCD. Also, it’s worth pointing out that the histogram display you are seeing is derived from the JPEG thumbnail image even if you are shooting RAW, so the histogram for the RAW file should have a greater dynamic range in its histogram anyway.
