Drayson still didn’t have an answer by the time he reached the implant clinic as they were opening for the day. He was grieving his naiveté. A bell that couldn't be unrung. And felt the corresponding responsibility of now what? settle across his shoulders. Working towards Emergence was no longer enough. Now he had to do his part to safeguard it. But how?

The clinic was tucked away on an interior block, a far cry from the glossy one Drayson had always gone to in the Canopy. The bland, beige décor screamed no-frills functionality. But the waiting room was clean and neat, if not exactly personable. The same thing could be said for the receptionist as she turned away the person in line ahead of Drayson. It was just his luck if this place didn’t take walk-ins.

The receptionist’s lip curled up at Drayson’s bedraggled approach to the desk. "Do you have an appointment?" she asked in a bored voice. Like she already knew the answer but was determined to stick to policy just to fuck with him.

"No, but I was hoping to get in today. It's kind of an emergency."

“Everyone says that. Everyone comes in here acting like the sky is falling when their implant's on the fritz."

“I realize that, but—”

"Without an appointment, the best I can do is fit you in a week from now."

"A week?" None of this was going how Drayson expected, how easy Nasco made everything sound. "Wait..." Drayson fumbled with his pockets, finally pulling out the card Nasco had given him and placed it on the pass-through.

Her slouch straightened as she palmed the card. Her eyes rolled back into her head, practically dancing in their sockets to a flurry of eyecast commands. “It’s your lucky day,” she said tonelessly. With a press of a button, the door separating the waiting room from the rest of the clinic slid open. “We've just had a cancellation.”
