Cadiz would soon turn into a symbol. As the siege progressed, the garrison progressively received aid from Spanish, British and Portuguese reinforcements. The British even attempted a landing at Fuengirola but were humiliated by a much smaller Franco-Polish army on 15 October 1810. Hubert Lismonte87 commented on the determination of the Spanish garrison a few days after the battle of Fuengirola:
Chiclana 22 October 1810
My very dear father
[â¦] It is true that I do not have a moment to write. Since we arrived in Spain, we have not stopped for a moment. We are always chasing the enemy. I use a moment of quiet to write that we are besieging Cadiz. It is the most beautiful seaport of Spain but there is no sign that they want to surrender [â¦].88
