CHAPTER 18

Malaria

Am I dying? I asked myself while the doctors argued with one another as if I weren’t in the room at all. I was bedridden in my Shalom dorm room only three weeks into my yearlong trip. Was it malaria? No one could seem to agree.

How did I get here? That’s actually a long story for only three weeks’ time. I remembered landing on Halloween at Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport. Tom Cox, a Water4 representative who lived in the capital city, Kampala, about forty minutes away, was waiting for me with Patrick from Shalom University. Tom was tall like me, with brown hair and a salt-and-pepper beard. He and Patrick helped me load my fifteen bags into Tom’s truck and we were off to his house.

OCTOBER 31

Made it safe to Uganda! I boarded a midday flight from Dallas to Chicago (two hours), Chicago to Qatar (over thirteen hours with a four-hour layover), then Qatar to Entebbe, Uganda (five hours), where I’ll stay a few days before heading into the Congo. I checked in thirteen bags and carried on two, and I think we’ll need a bunch more with enough PVC and steel pipes to drill eight water wells! That’s so many twenty-foot-long pipes! Despite the heavy lifting, I’m smitten by God! I get to go on a yearlong, WILD adventure into the jungle with my Dad, our Heavenly Father, learning to become Eféosa. Prayers please that driving through Uganda, around Lake Albert, and across the Congo border with so much gear goes smoothly.
