Target:

Brux, Czechoslovakia

Oil refinery. A short run and couldn’t open doors electrically, so had to crank down manually and up again. Flew with Elwell and led Charley squadron. So short a run that couldn’t drop bombs on leader. Doors were not opened. Had to land at Falconara airport (Limey controlled) to get fuel. Northeast of Ancona. Landed at 5:00, so stayed overnight and took off the next morning. Got home Oct. 21, at 10:00. Nine-ship squadrons. Altitude, 27,200. Mission—nine hours, forty minutes. Twelve (500 lb.), Pilot, Elwell, Heilman, Heitz, Goodman. Group diamond—couldn’t see target! Flak accurate, but spread out. None of our crew! Colored fellows graciously let us sleep in tents with them. Red flares at Falconara denoting air raid sign. All lights out! Just like the Fourth of July with all the red flares. Probably an enemy Recon. plane. 620 knots!

Mission:

37 and 38
