CHAPTER TEN

The afternoon was waning by the time Dante emerged from the spa. He’d been there a full hour longer than he had estimated or anticipated, even after accounting for Singh’s desire to hang around and chat.

Shrugging into his jacket and inhaling the air as he stepped outside, he muttered, “Still enough time. Plenty of time. These people don’t sleep much, anyway.”

Arms dealers, specifically.

An approaching matron looked at him with a weird expression. Her hearing must have been keen to have picked up on what he said, but he ignored her. Or perhaps it was another instance of someone vaguely recognizing his face from his days as a streamer but not wanting to leap to the conclusion that they’d bumped into a celebrity.

Another wave of relaxed satisfaction went through him as he moved past her, and he nearly paused to breathe out and enjoy it for a moment. He wanted to, but time was fleeting, so he didn’t.

It was the massage. Singh had insisted on it, and despite Dante’s misgivings, he had agreed. He wanted to keep Singh happy long enough to get the information he needed out of the man. There had also been an element of morbid curiosity. He’d assumed that massages were either pointless, decadent, or in a few disreputable cases, simply a euphemism for certain other, probably illegal activities.

When the whole thing had started, with him and Singh each lying next to each other on two nearby tables, facedown and covered with a towel, he’d felt stupid and awkward about it. Once the masseuses had arrived and started their work, his tension drained away, and surprisingly, he enjoyed the whole thing.

Not that he planned to admit it to anyone else for the foreseeable future. He was Dante Shale—he had a reputation to maintain. If people thought he was going soft and pampered on them, he would have an increasingly difficult time getting them to cooperate when he needed information, fast and direct. They would think he was a pushover or given to long flowery conversations.

Shaking his head to clear it of such thoughts, Dante pressed on toward a mostly empty park not far from the spa. It would give him enough privacy to set up the meeting with his contacts. At the same time, it was hardly a suspicious location for a person to linger and check things on their sphere. He would not have much to worry about if someone else stumbled onto him.

As the park drew closer, he recalled the other thing Singh had mentioned. It was the most useful and relevant bit of intel he’d received aside from the short list of names. Specifically, the man had divulged all he knew about retractable carbon filament blades.

There had been a buzz in the circles of people who used or dealt with weapons. Their concealable nature made them a true horror to whoever might end up on the wrong end of them. The blade proper could be hidden within many sorts of devices and deployed with the press of a button or other small trigger or simple action.
