Dante wiggled to squeeze through a jagged pile of rubble blocking their path forward. The ceiling had partially collapsed, along with a portion of the wall. A festering, pervasive stench filled his nose. This was the fourth tight squeeze in the last fifteen minutes.

He finished his escape from the latest obstacle. Mugoi pushed through in half the time and kept a certain elegant grace about its movements despite wriggling through the rubble like a worm.

They’d descended two levels based on the old blueprints Midas had turned up. Mounds of desiccated and discarded trash, roaches so large they bordered on Nightmutt territory, and fallen walls, ceilings, and support pillars had turned the old sublevels into a frustrating maze.

Dante stopped at a four-way intersection. Scorch marks ran along one wall. He knelt and pointed at the faint outline of a muddy boot print. “You’re right. We’re not alone down here. Based on what Tether told us, the room with the database should be close.”

“Someone might have already gotten it.” Mugoi narrowed its eyes and peered deeper into the hallway. “What will we do then?”

“No.” Dante shook his head. “It’s not that easy. I don’t care if people have been coming around. If it was only about getting in here and carrying it out, Firewall would have long since pulled that off. There’s something else here. Something else she didn’t tell us.”

Mugoi jogged after Dante as the senior Marauder hurried down a hallway. “She’s trying to get us killed?”

Dante shook his head. “No. I think she wants this database for her friends. I also think she’s testing us. That’s a good thing. It means Firewall might still think we’re an asset. As long as they all believe that, Nasreen’s safe.”

The hallway curved into a sloping, spiraling path with railings that took them around a series of clear metal tubes surrounding massive pipes that extended from the upper levels. They were cracked and covered with holes and missing chunks. Large lengths had broken free at different points and fallen against the outer tube. One pipe had pierced the tube and the railing.

Dante stepped over the tube. Midas had done his best to provide a general direction, but once they’d made it through the upper portions of the sublevels, his information proved woefully out of date, making the blueprints mostly ineffective. The general layout remained the same, giving Dante hope that the primary storage sublevel was their best bet.

A faint man’s voice sounded in the distance, raspy and strained. “We should clear the path. We could head right up there. It’d be easy. No one cares about that place.”

“That’s stupid,” replied another voice, this one with an obvious artificial modulation. “Those kids’ parts are junk. It’s not worth the risk.”

“Scavs,” Mugoi mouthed.

“What about that leg I got a month ago, huh? Sometimes soft touches donate ’em.” A low growling chuckle followed.

“They’re a good source of eye implants. That’s why I told the boss we should set up here. Good shit and no one cares when they go missing.
