REFRAMING BAD NEWS
The difference between stumbling blocks and
stepping-stones is how you use them.
—Anonymous
Not long ago I met with the top leadership of a thriving entertainment and restaurant company. Profits were climbing almost 10 percent annually. Growth over time had been dramatic. The leaders were crystal clear about the factors they could or could not control. They were always prepared, whether the news was good or bad.
Fearlessness is a whole lot easier when things are going well. But what about when life (inevitably) delivers disappointment? This is when fear can take hold. What we thought was a sure thing didn’t happen. What’s our next move? What if we can’t recover?
Being fearless is becoming comfortable with moments that produce the opposite result from what we had hoped. Fearlessness hinges on understanding that even in the midst of bad news, we still can control our attitudes and reactions.
Fearless people accept that bad news will come; we’re human and things happen. We don’t have to panic. We can learn and grow. In that way, we can reframe bad news.
Bad news tests our purpose. Is it elastic enough to accommodate moments of disappointment and find the lessons that are offered?
The trades in this chapter are very important for anyone who is taking a risk. The more you put yourself out there, the more you risk disappointment. These are the stakes of vulnerability. You are forced to come to terms with being at a point where you may feel most fearful and your purpose depends on your embracing fearlessness.
Practicing these five trades will help you become confident that you are going to take every lemon and make your own kick-ass lemonade. When bad news unfolds, you will be able to manage the situation because you will have practiced controlling what you can in the small moments. You will be able not only to stay on course during bad news but to reframe it so that something positive comes out of it.
