The parents inside the virtual safari room running from a lion

Outside of the house offers no reprise from the horrors that are inside. As George walks outside, he sees people in hazmat suits dragging what appear to be bodies into militarized ambulances to be carted off to some unknown place. Every depiction of these gas-masked phantoms calls to mind images from Chernobyl, as it appears some kind of radioactive scourge has ravaged the city. George’s doctor friend later explains that those are not human bodies being dragged, but apparitions that look like dead loved ones and friends. Tuliakhozhaev’s decision to set the narrative within this broader Frankenstein motif of resurrection-gone-wrong made the film less about the Hadley household and more of a systemic criticism of science unhinged. The threat of technological progress thus exists in both settings of the film. The Happylife Home is supposed to be relief from the horrid realities outside—technology providing relief for the problems of technology—but it’s only causing a rift between parents and children. Outside, the risk is more evident: human progress and science has created an inhabitable zone where people must suffer the loss of a loved one twice.
