Chapter Seven

“Daddy, it was so much fun. They had a whole spaceship made of Legos—one you could walk into! How many Legos do you think it took to make something that big?” Kendall bounced on the bed, while Jessica answered her sister’s question.

“Millions, I think.”

Annie leaned closer and whispered, “If you were looking for a little quiet bedtime conversation, I think you brought up the wrong subject.” Daniel and Annie were sharing the bedtime ritual for the first time. He liked the feel of it, the sharing and the closeness.

Daniel nodded and turned to his two gymnasts. “Now, listen you two, it’s time to settle down. If you can’t talk about your adventure without treating the bed like a trampoline, then maybe we’d better skip this and turn out the light.” The threat didn’t work until he took Annie’s hand and began to rise from the edge of the bed.

Kendall and Jessica looked at each other and immediately stopped shaking the springs. They scrambled under the covers and looked so angelic that both Daniel and Annie laughed.

Daniel nodded his approval. “Well, I’m glad you got the message. Now why don’t we both read you that next chapter of The Little Princess.”

“Okay,” Kendall agreed. “You can be the man parts and Annie can be the girl parts.”

Daniel smiled at the girls and the woman beside him. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Annie definitely had the larger part. He sat back, listening to her sweet Southern voice and let the drawl sweep over him. The slow, soft cadence touched his heart as completely as her tears had a few hours ago. Her voice reminded him of the welcoming warmth of her lips when he’d kissed her, when he’d realized he loved her.

They smiled at each other as Annie showed the girls an illustration. He had no doubts. He did love her, in a hundred different ways. The way she talked, and smiled. He even loved the way she sipped tea, all curled up on the couch like a kitten.

“Daddy, you’re not paying attention.” Kendall distracted him and he turned promptly to his single line.

Annie smiled at him, he smiled back. As she turned the page she whispered, “You don’t have many lines, but they’re very important.”

He nodded solemnly and promptly lost himself in her voice again.

She was teasing him, but she’d never spoken truer words. He hadn’t played any part in the twins’ lives until the last two years, but even though his part had been small, she’d made him appreciate how important he had been and would always be. If he loved her in a hundred different ways, then it was also true he loved her for a hundred different reasons. That was only one of them.

He almost missed his next line and forced himself to pay attention until the final phrase was read. They spent a minute or two discussing the ending, then Annie suggested prayers.

“Can we say them to ourselves tonight? I’m praying for something that’s a secret.” Kendall smiled at Jessica who nodded vigorously.
