By the end of the day, even with Isa’s injection, I was still exhausted from the work I had done, and Olivia looked like she was worn out from constantly healing me.

“Let’s go home,” Olivia said as we finished the last of the group.

I nodded and opened a portal to Fantasia. We entered via the throne room like we had the first time, where Kaspian, his retainers, and Seraphina were waiting for us. Up until that point, Alton and Olivia had always kept their relationship relatively calm in front of Seraphina, trying to keep it a secret. But when we walked through that portal, Alton was right there, ready to hug Olivia. Given the way she responded to IrrelephantElephant, I knew it wasn’t a good history, and Alton knew more than me. Hell, everyone in the room seemed to know more than I did. I was drained, emotionally and physically. My body tingled all over.

“You good?” Eros whispered. I shook my head. I knew I owed the people waiting at the shrine a visit, but all I wanted to do was spend the night playing chess with Kaspian.

“Kaspian, can you open the portal to the shrine?” I asked.

“You can take a break,” Kaspian offered. “You don’t have to go right away.”

“I want to,” I clarified. “Because I want to spend the rest of my night playing chess with you.”

He nodded with a smirk on his face and opened a portal to the shrine. I was even happier when he joined Eros and me at the shrine. I only spent fifteen minutes there, but at least I showed up. I gave people hope, or whatever it was they were looking for from me, and performed my duties as expected. When I looked at Kaspian, he opened the portal straight to the library and our chess table. I settled down, pushed a pawn forward, then started crying.

“What happened today?” he asked, knowing not to try and cuddle me yet.

“Everything.” I coughed a laugh. “I saved children, Bryce played mind games, and I might have saved someone I’m related to today.”

“What? How do you know?”

“I have an unread file in my DMs right now that Bryce says is my list of relatives.”

“Have you opened it?”

“I’m terrified, and all I thought then was how you were the only one missing. I wanted you there, but I didn’t want you to know if they hated me or not. I didn’t want you to see that I’m unlovable by family: the people who are supposed to love me. Because what if you find that I’m not loveable either?”

“What?” He raised an eyebrow.

After such a long day, I didn’t have the same level of confidence I usually did. In fact, I felt the exact opposite. I felt horrible for exposing Olivia to a person who hurt her in her past, for Bryce and Cody’s continued annoyance, and that I couldn’t even stop Feather because I didn’t try hard enough. I could’ve closed the portal but, instead, I just watched her walk out of my life because I was too afraid of the rejection to stop her.
