Penny was walking into the bathroom to take a shower when the phone rang. “Penny? Sammie. I just got off the phone with Sibyl.”

“Henry and Sarah just left. It’s as if they’d never had that fight at the market.”

“She’ll wise up eventually,” said Sammie. “We all learn at our own pace.”

“I guess.” Letting your children learn the hard way the lessons you had learned the hard way was the toughest part of parenting. Penny sank back down on the couch. “What did Sibyl have to say?”

“She says she saw Kent when he was leaving. Was that about three forty-five?”

“Roughly. It wasn’t long after he left that Nora opened the market. Wait, she was watching him and waiting to open until he drove off, so closer to four.”

“She says she didn’t pay much attention before that. She was busy setting up her jellies. She didn’t even know about the punch. She got there too late to get George’s spot, so she took the one next to him. She agrees Abbie was helping Henry set up his music, but that’s all she remembers.”

“Did you talk to Rosalind?”

“She’s supposed to call me back. She was midwifing a nanny. What did Henry say?”

“He remembers less than Sibyl. It makes you wonder, doesn’t it?”

“Not surprising. No one knew Kent was going to go off and die. Farmers get focused on getting their displays ready.”

“No one knew but the poisoner. I got Herman, but he thinks Giles did it. He gave me a lecture on killer seeds and plastic vegetables.”

“Let’s call it a night.”

“I was doing that when you called. Maybe when I get caught up on my sleep, I’ll remember more. I was right there.”

“Don’t be too hard on yourself, Penny. I’ll try the others tomorrow.”

“Me, too, when Seb’s sleeping.”
