FANNY HURRIED INTO the night searching for Midas. She didn’t know how the animal had gotten out of her room, and why he had attacked the man who had bought her cake was beyond her.

“Midas,” she called, peering into the night. “Midas, you come out here.”

Dark silence was her only reply.

CANE STOMPED FROM THE church and the pleasant evening he’d been having with Fanny. He could all but taste the sweetness of a cake baked specially for him, and now that delight had turned to ashes on his tongue.

“Confound it!” Cane spluttered, stepping out into the cold night. He had left his coat behind in the church, but his anger was enough to keep him warm. “Dadblamed intruder.” Cane’s words mumbled into the darkness as his eyes roved the street.

He had been starting to enjoy his fake courtship with Fanny, even fantasizing about it becoming real once he made his mark in Needful, but now some drifter with a pocket full of cash had horned in on his day, and Cane couldn’t bear to watch Fanny sharing ‘his cake’ with another.

Cane had determined to get his life in order that night when Fanny had caught him in the saloon. He had trusted her to guide him into a path where the law wasn’t dogging his trail, but now, all that had flown right out the window.

The cowboy’s eyes wandered down the street to the soft golden glow pouring through the windows of the town’s saloon. Licking his lips, Jude Cane could all but taste the whisky that would warm his frozen heart.

“Fanny can see to herself,” Cane growled, stepping into the icy street and striding toward the bar. He’d had enough of pinching his pennies for nothing. A stiff drink and a good laugh with his friends would drown out the frustration of leaving Miss Fanny behind.

Something large and furry shot past Cane like lightning through storm clouds, but he ignored it, his path already set. The closer he got to the saloon, the more he set his heart and the warm glow from the lamps inside engulfed him beckoning Cane into the friendly welcome of the saloon.

“What’a ya mean you might not keep the place open?” A cowpoke asked as he leaned against the bar. “Where would we go for a drink?”

There were few men in the saloon, but Beau Alder stood, stalwart, behind the long polished bar.

“Whisky!” Cane shouted, stomping to the bar and hitching a foot on the rail. “I got cash,” he added, slapping a coin on the bar. “Give me a nice big one.”

“Howdy Cane,” the cowboy at the bar grinned. “Been a while since we seen you in here.”

“I’ve been busy.”

“Busy sparkin’ that Fortuna girl,” the cowboy grinned. “I reckon maybe I could head over to the church and have a look at those girls. One down, three to go.”

“Watch what you say about my sisters-in-law,” Beau chided, pouring a shot for Cane. “I figured you’d be over there with Fanny right now,” he added, giving Cane a stern look.
