CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
“I’d love to stick around and chat,” Seth said as he sprang to his feet, “but I need to go make some security arrangements.” Instead of crossing paths with Master Rōshi Dorje he headed toward the patio exit.
“Coward!” Olivia shouted as he waved without looking back just before disappearing outside.
“This is going to be entertaining,” Olivia said as she watch Rōshi approaching.
“What did you do?” Kharmista whispered.
“I had a gift delivered to his room this morning.”
“From the look on his face I don’t think he much liked your gift,” Kharmista said.
“Here’s a heads up. He’ll just be mad at me but he may be furious with you,” Olivia said with a laugh.
“What did I do?” Kharmista protested.
“Nothing, but you might get a chance to work on those new bitch skills we talked about.”
“Excellent,” Kharmista said.
Master Rōshi Gaganvihari Dorje, a man who the mere mention of his name would send most of the villains on the planet scurrying for cover, arrived at their table visibly shaking with anger.
“How dare you!,” Rōshi roared as he held up a t-shirt which said, ‘Ask me About My Grandkids!’
“Wrong size?” Olivia asked innocently. “I can return it for you Paw-paw.”
Kharmista’s hand flew to her mouth as she tried to keep from laughing out loud.
“How dare you?” Rōshi shouted. “That is confidential information known only to a select few.”
Olivia stuck out her bottom lip and made a pouty face in Kharmista’s direction. “Grandpa yelled at me.”
“Master Rōshi,” Kharmista said calmly. “You’re making a scene.”
Rōshi wheeled on Kharmista. “As for you,” he barked as he waved a finger in her direction, “there is only one place she could have gotten this information. You impertinent…”
“Silence!” Kharmista said softly through gritted teeth. “How dare you speak to the heir of the House of Yavar in that tone?” Instantly Master Rōshi’s dropped his eyes and lowered his head. He knew he had crossed the line.
“I apologize,” he said meekly.
Olivia, out of Rōshi’s sight line but still in Kharmista’s, held up nine fingers for her to see. The corners of Kharmista’s mouth started to break into a smile but she caught herself.
“Now,” Kharmista said, “apologize to Olivia.” Olivia pretended she was sticking a dagger in her heart.
“I would rather die first,” Rōshi muttered without raising his head.
“That,” Kharmista said as she nodded toward the entrance to restaurant, “can be arranged.”
Michael Charon and Valerie McIntosh had just turned the corner. The instant Charon saw the confrontation, he broke into a dead run in their direction. “What’s going on?” he asked as he surveyed the room for any other potential risks.
“This man has insulted me and refuses to apologize,” Kharmista said as she raised her chin to look the much taller Charon in the eyes. “He said he would rather die first.” An uncomfortable silence settled over the table. “I’m considering granting him his wish.”
“If you’re looking for a volunteer!” Valerie McIntosh offered cheerfully as she joined the table. “I’ll do it for no charge.” Her eyes narrow on Rōshi. “I’ll even make a donation to the charity of your choice if you let me do it slowly.
