In the kitchen, Nora had introduced everyone and invited them to sit down. Kid and Rain came in before everyone sat down for their coffee. Kidâs sisters seemed friendly but reserved toward the group. Kid came over to Sharon and gave her a hug, âHello, Sharon. How was your trip?â
Sharon Capriotti could have been knocked over with a small puff of wind, but returned his hug. âFine. How are you?â
âIâm good. Did you have trouble finding Schroeders?â
âNot at all,â Evelyn sniffed. âI was older than you when we left. I knew where it was.â
Kid reached out of give her a hug and she stiffened, âWere you handling livestock? You need to change before you grope me.â
âDonât worry, I wonât grope you,â Kid chuckled. âCome on Rain, we need to wash the animal germs off our hands before we eat kuchen.â
Evelyn looked at him with disdain and then went to sit down at the table. Nora and Carl exchanged a look and then Carl zeroed in. âSo, what brings you ladies out here? From what I heard, you havenât been back in years.â
âWe both have very full lives,â the tall, slim Evelyn Forrest answered condescendingly. âWe have too much to do to travel to the prairies.â
Carl laughed, âWell then, I guess we should be honored that youâd share your time with us.â
Grandma cleared her throat and said, âIâll go tell Kathleen that weâre having coffee.â
Irritated by Evelynâs attitude, Carl was not about to let up. He instinctively didnât like Evelyn, and still had Sharon on strict trial. âSo, what occurred that spiked your interest at this time?â
âWe heard that our home had burned to the ground and had been told it was likely that Harold died in the fire. We came to sort out the estate.â
âWell,â Carl leaned back, âThere was a hell of a fire and Kid almost died. Luckily, he survived. Itâll be nice for you to rekindle your relationship with your brother.â
Her hair was brown and Evelyn had brown eyes, now squinting from behind her glasses with more diamonds on frames than anyone in the room wore on their hands. She sniffed, âI guess itâs still worthwhile to talk to Harold. We know he has the wanderlust and wonât want to set down roots. We thought we could take the burden off his shoulders and he could go back to his vagabond life.â
âHm, didnât know that.â Carl put some cream in his coffee, âFunny he didnât mention that to me, since Iâm involved in some of his business ventures.â
Kid had just come out of the washroom when he heard Carl say that and almost choked. He gave Carl a glance and Carl winked back at him. Kid could tell that Carl was enjoying interrogating his prey.
âSo, what would you two busy ladies do with it? Would you farm it?â
âOh, gracious no,â the raven-haired Sharon answered. âIt would be simply an investment. The mineral rights will someday make it worthwhile.â
âOh, youâre going to mine coal?â
Evelyn was still scrutinizing Carl, âWe were just going to hold onto it for now.
