When he entered the conference room, lights came on, and he was relieved at being the first to arrive. He liked having the time to settle in and prepare. The space was painted an off-white except for the back wall. The Freedom Assembly’s logo, a small circle set on a larger one that in turn rested on a base of two upward prongs that ended in sharp points, was painted in a deep blue. It created a focus behind the conference table, one always in view of those watching the meetings over video and impossible to ignore for those in the room.

Paul padded across the gray carpet and took a seat at the short end of the rectangular, black table, and pressed his hand on the surface. The section below became transparent, revealing a console and holodisplay. His private notes were now visible only to him, and he began reviewing them again. Yaoana. I just can’t let him get to me. I know he’s concerned about the risk Serina presents and has never agreed that her being a pawn releases her of responsibility. How can I convince him she has value if she switches sides?

He heard the door slide open, and Member Mara Tines entered.

“Hello, Speaker Katorana,” she said, greeting him with a smile. Her blonde hair was tied back into a loose ponytail that left no distractions from her intensely blue eyes that matched her short dress.

As she sat down next to him, he momentarily was distracted by her legs.

“I did. I know we should wait, but the fact the other fighter got away…that concerns me.”

“That was unexpected,” he said. “There are reasons I think we needn’t worry, though. We should hear from Member Ryson before we draw a firm conclusion. General Yaoana will also assure you he’s got the military poised and ready should anything come of it.”

“Did I hear my name?” A deep voice boomed. Yaoana’s wide form nearly filled the doorway. His black military uniform had the Freedom Assembly insignia in silver on the left chest. “What is it I am supposed to be saying?” He made his way to the table. Though there was no set seating order, he always insisted on sitting next to Paul, saying a military man’s place was next to his leader.

As he sat, Paul noticed two red threads woven into the braid running along the right side of Yaoana’s head. The braid ended just behind the ear, and was traditionally worn during war by the general’s tribe on Metarana. That’s not a good sign. In the years since the emperor’s death, Yaoana had worn the braid with one thread. His dark hair was otherwise cropped short, making the new second thread hard to ignore. Is it a sign for me, or just a response to having
