THREE WEEKS LATER
“So?” Julia asked Carrie. Carrie had regaled the family with some entertaining stories about life on the road with a popular club band. She had shared a few of her favorite pictures. Julia sensed there was something Carrie was holding back. She was both curious and beginning to become concerned. The few conversations that they had shared while Carrie was away indicated that the assignment was going well. It was clear to Julia that Carrie was struggling with something. She was having difficulty determining whether that something was a potentially positive thing or if something had occurred that had upset Carrie in some way.
“What?” Carrie asked. Meghan and Jordan had grown bored of their mothers’ company and the decidedly adult conversation. They had retired to the family room to entertain themselves with a movie. Jake had excused himself with a kiss to Carrie’s cheek to go spend some time with his friends. That left Carrie and Julia alone for the first time in over three weeks.
“Care?” Julia said with a slight chuckle. “You don’t think that three weeks apart means I have forgotten everything about you; do you?” Julia asked. “Something is on your mind. It sounds like you had a great time. From what you shared, it looks like it will be a fabulous piece,” Julia observed. Carrie nodded apprehensively. “What happened? Did you break some guitarist’s heart after all?” Julia asked lightly. She watched Carrie closely as Carrie toyed with the napkin in front of her, refusing to meet Julia’s eyes. Julia tugged at her bottom lip gently as she processed the reaction. “She must be something pretty special,” Julia said honestly.
Carrie looked up with watery eyes. “Nothing happened, Jules.”
Julia smiled in earnest. “And, it would be all right if it had, Care.”
“Would it; really?” Carrie asked.
“Yes,” Julia said as she took hold of Carrie’s hand.
“I don’t know if that makes me feel more relieved or sad,” Carrie admitted.
Julia nodded. “I didn’t say it doesn’t hurt,” she admitted with a wink. “Because, it does hurt a little to know that someone has captured your attention enough that you are afraid to tell me.” Carrie looked at Julia apologetically. Julia smiled. “But, if someone has, and I think someone has; then I am happy for you, Care.”
“I don’t even know what it means, Jules,” Carrie said. “We’re just friends.”
“But part of you thinks that it could be more,” Julia guessed. Carrie nodded. “Why is that upsetting you?” Julia asked.
“Why? Jules….God, my life has been with you for almost fifteen years. Our family means everything to me. You know that,” Carrie said. Julia waited for her to continue. “I’m not ready to….We’re not even divorced…”
“We’re separated,” Julia said.
“I’m not ready,” Carrie said softly. “I’m not ready to be dating anyone.”
Julia sat quietly for a moment. She studied Carrie and then chuckled. “Love’s a bitch,” she said.
“I’m not in love, Julia,” Carrie snapped defensively.
“Okay. Lust is a bitch.”
“Julia!”
“What?”
Carrie started to snicker slightly. “Stop. This is so…”
“What? Strange? You mean talking to your soon to be ex-wife about your new girlfriend,” Julia goaded.
