Matt and I love going for long walks; he used to go hiking in the highlands of Scotland, showed me photos of himself on Ben Nevis, and often when we used to meet up for a drink, before we got together, he'd talk about his idea of one day just taking off with a tarp tent and walking around Britain, living off a pound a day. One day he comes up with the idea that we could walk the South Downs Way over the course of the winter, one section every couple of weekends. At least it might keep us out of the shops – my flat is getting filled up with all manner of quirky things we've found and liked – though he does find me some good walking boots; I complain they are too big and hard to walk in at first, but soon wonder how I ever did without them. On Saturday mornings we get up when it's still dark and the moon is bright in the sky, and we walk down to the train station in our boots and fleeces, and go off to a new place for a spectacular day's walking up hills and through forests, arriving somewhere different every time. We get cold and soaked some days, but other days are bright and sunny with breathtaking views, and invariably there are things to discover along the way, churches with interesting histories, wildlife and warm pubs. It's a perfect way to get outdoors in the darker winter months.
