“Will ye keep it down? Some of us are tryin’ to work.” Steam comes out of Callum’s flared nostrils as he stomps across the freshly laid foundation for the bottling facility. Shit. He’s in one of his moods again.

“Sorry about the noise, Callum.” I drop my brick trowel into the bucket of mortar and slap my hands together. “This’ll all be over next week.”

“No’ soon enough,” he groans under his breath. “Doubt yer da would appreciate ye disruptin’ the peace.”

Annoyance slices through my chest. Enough’s enough. All ten of Neil’s guys are red in the face, sweat drenching their clothes after they finished laying the bricks for the four outer walls of the warehouse. At the rate we’re working, we have a real chance at wrapping up without a second to spare.

The roof goes up tomorrow. Electricity wired on Tuesday. The rinser, bottling and capping machine, and the labeler all arrive on Thursday.

I’ve been enjoying putting this all together and managing the project. The changes I’m making are like the ones I thought of as a boy—they’ll get Anderson whisky out into the world. As they should. We have a damn good product.

Callum’s grouchy attitude isn’t going to put a stop to any of that.

“Da will be fine. He left me in charge,” I remind him as sternly as possible.

“Fine, have it yer way.” Callum stares daggers at me, muttering as he storms off. “The prodigal lad with all his bright notions.”

I return to work, hauling the remainder of the masonry tools out of the way. The entire place needs to be cleared out before the crane arrives in the morning. My arms strain as I carry two buckets full of excess mortar.

In spite of Callum’s grumblings, the best part about throwing myself into this construction is getting to reconnect with the part of myself that loved the outdoors. We’ve been working from sunrise to sunset. My muscles have been pummeled with relentless work.

It’s the most present I’ve felt in years. The way I used to feel on my runs as a boy, or when I played rugby. It’s just me and the pounding of my heart in my ears.

The way I felt with Meadow when we made love.

Maybe she’s not the only one in need of reconnecting with herself.

I used to love being active, using my body like a tool and not a house for my brain.

“Callum’s always been a hard one to crack,” Neil says sympathetically, a plank of scaffolding on his right shoulder.

“Aye.”

“You work as if you’ve done it your whole life. I could use a big guy like you on our team.” Neil sends a fist into my shoulder, and I wince. The buckets I’m carrying almost collapse onto the ground.

Alright, maybe between the rugby coaching and the manual labor, I’m a bit spent.

“I’d only slow you down. But if we’re talking about poker tonight, then you all better stay sharp,” I call out to the guys. Thanks to Ave’s advice, I’m hosting everyone. Great way to put the stability of my new kitchen table to the test.
