CHAPTER SIX

AFTER BREAKFAST ON board the Causcelle jet with Jean-Louis, Françoise realized that this interlude of being treated like a princess was fast coming to an end. She’d loved being in his world for a little while and regretted that it was over.

As they talked during the flight, his black eyes came alive. He told her that his dreams for helping vets were going to come true now that he’d had the important talk with his father and family. He also explained that he’d be living on the family estate and working there from now on. It meant he’d only be in Paris once in a while to check on his project.

Since she’d been given a week’s freedom to plan out her life, she’d made up her mind to drive to Bourges and check out the hospital there. If she were hired, that would mean no more chance meetings with Jean-Louis.

His latest news shouldn’t have bothered her, but it did in ways she was afraid to acknowledge. Much as she longed to be with him, a relationship with him was out of the question right now.

“Françoise?”

She glanced at him.

“You’ve been wonderful to my family, but I know there’s a pain inside of you that won’t be going away soon. I’ve given it a lot of thought and an idea came to my mind during the night. Do you live by a certain faith, or go to a certain church?”

His question astonished her coming out of the blue as it did. “Yes. Our family is Catholic.”

“So’s mine, although I stopped going years ago.” She could understand that since she hadn’t gone for a long time either. “Did your parents have you baptized at a church here in Paris?”

“Yes. My great-aunt is my godmother and witnessed it. That’s why we’ve been so close.”

“What if we stop by there on the way to your apartment and talk to the priest? Trying to get information online won’t tell you anything. But if you see him in person, maybe he can show you the written document, or answer some of your questions. It’s possible that he or someone else in the clergy who knew your parents could shed some light on the adoption for you.”

She sucked in her breath. “You’re brilliant to have thought of that, Jean-Louis. I don’t know why it hadn’t occurred to me to go there for answers right away.”

“I’m sure you would have thought of it at some point. But remember, you just took your boards. And you’ve had too much on your mind with your move back here and helping my family.”

“Thank you for being in my corner. The truth is, I haven’t been to church for ages. No wonder it wasn’t my first thought.”

“That’s one thing we have in common,” he murmured.

“Actually, we have three,” she claimed. “Neither of us knew our birth mother. And neither of us told each other the whole truth about ourselves right off.”

He shook his head. “My lie was premeditated ten years ago.”

“But I’ve been claiming to be a Valmy all my life.
