Chapter 11 (Surprise Visits)
The next morning I woke up before Anita. She was sleeping so peacefully and the sun was just coming up I couldn’t bear to wake her. I got dressed and found a pen and paper. I left a note thanking her for dinner and dessert and told her to call me. I left Larry asleep on the couch and went home. Once I was there I fed Buddy and let him out. Changing into my ranger uniform I sped off to work.
The morning went by incredibly slow, my lunch break could not come soon enough. I checked my phone about every 20 minutes to make sure I didn’t miss any calls or texts. Just as I was biting into a turkey and cheese sandwich, heavy on the turkey, my phone rang. I knew it was my sister Becca before I even looked at it. She had stolen my phone one day and changed her ringtone to, Howlin’ at the Moon by Hank Williams Sr., and then she called me 142 times in one day. She thought it’d make me mad but it has a catchy tune and it’s stayed ever since. In a sweet turn of events the song got stuck in my head and I sang it for days on end while we were away on wolf business and she was the one who ended up regretting the ringtone.
“What’s up?” I asked in between bites. I was a little tired this morning and needed all the food I could get to keep myself alert for the next four hours.
“I called last night to see if you wanted to run. You’re dog answered back. But I didn’t hear so much as a whimper from you. What happened?”
“Oh you did? Hmmm. Ya I didn’t hear you. Weird I must have been super tired and dead to the world. Anyways, what are you up to?”
“Don’t change the subject on me. I went to your house last night when you didn’t answer thinking something was wrong. Turns out you weren’t even home. Also turns out when I stopped by at the end of my run around three in the morning you still weren’t home. So Blue, what gives? You get a little dessert after dinner last night.”
“I had a lovely evening. Wonderful dinner, salad and steak, some red wine and we watched the sunset from her balcony.”
“Lovely, wonderful, did you diddle? Go muff diving? Fuck? Come on give me the details. Is she a lesbian?”
“I think it’s safe to say that if she wasn’t she definitely is now. That’s all you’re getting. I have to finish my lunch and go back to work. I’ll talk to you soon.”
Smiling I hung up the phone. It was going to be a long day and I already knew the only thing I’d be thinking about was Anita’s hands on me, scratching down my back. My skin tingled everywhere she touched me. I could feel my wolf scratching to come out. I knew my eyes were glowing.
