Hours later, Joe sat in the day room with Raisa, Terry, Io and Ulysses. Also present was Raisa's first officer, a middle aged man named Bailey Chase. Joe had met him several times before, but the man generally kept to his duties and mingled little with what he called 'the guests'.

The ship lay in a tight orbit around the tiny moon, only about one hundred kilometres above the surface. The fleet had, by order of Admiral Santiago, taken position several thousand kilometres away, all ships on high alert. His explanation was, with the star-ship somewhere nearby he did not want to be caught unaware. Three of his ships remained close to the Vasco da Gama as bodyguards, in a higher orbit above the moon

“We need to get a better view of the building,” Raisa said. “Our close-up scans show what appear to be entrances at several points, but only one has anything like a landing pad.”

What can we expect to find down there, Joe wondered, his mind casting back to the giant structure on Titan that proved to be nothing more than an insubstantial phantom.

“The Tanakhai took the time to build something that big, way out here, so they must have had a reason. It's unlikely to be a hologram because until now there haven't been humans here to see it. Wouldn't you agree, Io?”

“I know nothing of this structure. It would appear the knowledge I possess is limited, so I am not surprised.”

Joe could have sworn Io was sulking. “You still think this is not your people?” he asked.

“I no longer know. The understanding I have is the ship would be sent out to the Oort cloud after one century and would remain there until you re-discovered it, probably centuries from now. All my people were supposed to assume human bodies and move to either Earth or Mars, but that never happened. After organizing our evacuation, I now know there were only a few hundred of us, mostly on Earth. Many thousands remain on the Minaret.”

“So you don't know anything about this building,” Raisa concluded. “That makes me want to get down there more than ever. What do you think it is?”

For a moment Io scrutinized the young captain as if she was stupid, the alien’s face showing the slight traces of arrogance and superiority Joe had come to associate with her and her kin.

“Surely you can guess? I would think it obvious. It's a cyclotron, the largest ever constructed in this system. Whoever is in charge of my star-ship is manufacturing antimatter here on a massive scale.”
