Chapter 16
Allie
Inviting Harrison back to my place was a terrible idea.
Thatâs the thought I have running through my head as the car service takes us from the hangar where he keeps his private plane back to my apartment. I didnât want to go to his place because I donât feel like Iâm in control of the situation when Iâm there, and control is something I need to feel right now. But I shouldnât have invited him over. I should have told him we could discuss things somewhere neutralâa coffee shop or something. Heâd have liked that. All he needs me for is the opportunity to be seen in public with me, so he would probably have preferred that.
But itâs too late now. Weâre pulling up in front of my apartment, and it doesnât feel like I can take it back.
I haul my suitcase up the stairs. I can hear him following behind me, and I do my best to pretend that he isnât there, but I know itâs something I have to deal with. Hopefully we can keep this conversation as brief as possible so that he can be on his way. I havenât had so much as a moment alone to sit and process since I took that pregnancy test, and my thoughts areâwell, if Iâm honest, Iâm not having any thoughts at all about that. I know that eventually, I will have to think about it, but right now itâs as if my mind is giving me a reprieve from the subject by allowing me to focus on other things. Things like how complicated itâs going to be having Harrison in my small apartment, where weâll be forced into close proximity with one another when Iâm trying to distance myself from him.
I have no idea whether or not Iâve got the strength to resist him. I donât love my odds.
I let us into the apartment and drop my bag on the floor right inside the door. I can unpack later. âSay what you came to say,â I tell him.
âCan we sit down or something, at least?â
I cut my eyes in the direction of the kitchen table.
He ignores that and strides into the living room as if he had been invited, and sits down on the couch. âAllie, I didnât mean to upset you,â he starts. âWe can keep looking into what happened to those laptops.â
âSure,â I say. âUntil someone else at your company says something that makes you believe nothing nefarious happened.â
His expression hardens. âAt some point, youâll have to accept that nothing did,â he says.
âI canât accept that.â
âYou mean that? Not even if we find proof? Because if youâre determined to think the worst no matter what the evidence says, thereâs no point in me investigating at all. Thereâs nothing I can do to convince you. You have to tell me youâll be willing to listen if we find reasonable evidence.â
âOf course I would listen to evidence,â I scoff. âBut you havenât found any yet.â
âNeither have you,â he points out.
