Chapter 16

Allie

Inviting Harrison back to my place was a terrible idea.

That’s the thought I have running through my head as the car service takes us from the hangar where he keeps his private plane back to my apartment. I didn’t want to go to his place because I don’t feel like I’m in control of the situation when I’m there, and control is something I need to feel right now. But I shouldn’t have invited him over. I should have told him we could discuss things somewhere neutral—a coffee shop or something. He’d have liked that. All he needs me for is the opportunity to be seen in public with me, so he would probably have preferred that.

But it’s too late now. We’re pulling up in front of my apartment, and it doesn’t feel like I can take it back.

I haul my suitcase up the stairs. I can hear him following behind me, and I do my best to pretend that he isn’t there, but I know it’s something I have to deal with. Hopefully we can keep this conversation as brief as possible so that he can be on his way. I haven’t had so much as a moment alone to sit and process since I took that pregnancy test, and my thoughts are—well, if I’m honest, I’m not having any thoughts at all about that. I know that eventually, I will have to think about it, but right now it’s as if my mind is giving me a reprieve from the subject by allowing me to focus on other things. Things like how complicated it’s going to be having Harrison in my small apartment, where we’ll be forced into close proximity with one another when I’m trying to distance myself from him.

I have no idea whether or not I’ve got the strength to resist him. I don’t love my odds.

I let us into the apartment and drop my bag on the floor right inside the door. I can unpack later. “Say what you came to say,” I tell him.

“Can we sit down or something, at least?”

I cut my eyes in the direction of the kitchen table.

He ignores that and strides into the living room as if he had been invited, and sits down on the couch. “Allie, I didn’t mean to upset you,” he starts. “We can keep looking into what happened to those laptops.”

“Sure,” I say. “Until someone else at your company says something that makes you believe nothing nefarious happened.”

His expression hardens. “At some point, you’ll have to accept that nothing did,” he says.

“I can’t accept that.”

“You mean that? Not even if we find proof? Because if you’re determined to think the worst no matter what the evidence says, there’s no point in me investigating at all. There’s nothing I can do to convince you. You have to tell me you’ll be willing to listen if we find reasonable evidence.”

“Of course I would listen to evidence,” I scoff. “But you haven’t found any yet.”

“Neither have you,” he points out.
