13 Seriously Late

Prince Kellan didn’t even shoot Princess Ava a look when she rushed into Dr. Tucker’s office. She hastily sat next to him on the flowered loveseat.

“Sorry I’m late.”

“You’re always late,” he answered, glaring at her. “It just shows me you’re not taking this seriously.”

“I am to,” she said defiantly.

“Your lateness may indicate your resistance to therapy,” Dr. Tucker said. “But let’s not focus on that now. I’d like you to arrive on time. Punctuality is important to your husband, and I want you to keep that in mind.”

“Fine. Okay. Got it,” she responded impatiently.

Dr. Tucker stared blankly at her for a moment, which made her feel uncomfortable. Was her makeup smudged? Was her hair a mess? Was she sweating?

“I’d like you to put into words why you’re resistant to therapy.”

“I’m not,” she answered automatically. “I guess I feel kind of ganged up on. I think a woman would understand me better.”

“We’re all on the same side here,” Dr. Tucker assured her. “We all have the same goal, and we’re all here to strengthen your marriage. This isn’t about who’s right or wrong.”

“Except when I’m late,” she muttered sarcastically.

Dr. Tucker leaned forward in his chair, and she noticed his pink and burgundy tie. The colors were quite pleasing together. She realized he’d said something, and she’d missed it.

“What?” she said. “Can you repeat that?”

“See how she is?” Prince Kellan said to Dr. Tucker with frustration.

“I noticed his tie. The colors are…”

“What I was saying,” Dr. Tucker interrupted, “is that it’s important to listen and hear each other. If you’re feeling uncomfortable, then I’d like you to verbalize it. Then we can understand what you’re feeling.” He leaned back in his chair. “It’s important that you feel safe to communicate honestly. There’s no judgment here. Just honesty.”

Princess Ava shook her head. “Now you’re not being honest. The first thing you did was judge me because I was late and make assumptions about it.”

“That’s a valid point,” Dr. Tucker agreed. “Let’s continue and move forward.”

She felt a bit of satisfaction at his acknowledgment.

“I’d like to thank Kellan again for speaking to Jill, who’s been interviewing me. It meant a lot to me,” she said generously, wanting to head in a more positive direction.

“Good,” Dr. Tucker said with a smile.

“I only did it to bring some substance to the interview,” Prince Kellan explained. “I’m apprehensive about how the article will turn out. I don’t want us to sound frivolous and removed from reality.”

“Why don’t you share with us what you and Jill have been talking about,” Dr. Tucker suggested to her. “It will ease your husband’s fears and help him understand your motivation.”

“Well,” Princess Ava said. “She keeps asking how we met and about our wedding and my background. She just wants to know our story; that’s all. I don’t think there’s any hidden agenda. People love romantic stories.”

“You’re so naïve.” Prince Kellan shook his head. “I hope you’re not making up some big romantic fabrication that she’ll see right through, and I hope you’re being discreet.
