Chapter Fourteen
After working with Marco, seeing what Andrew could do, and knowing full well that there were people with far more exotic powers in the world than hers, Colleen knew she shouldn't have stood there with her mouth hanging open. It was just that never in her wildest dreams did she think someone could have a power like what she'd just seen.
The woman got a distant look in her eyes and smiled at Karen and Colleen.
"The mayor is back from the town meeting and asks for you both downstairs. Follow me, please."
They followed, keeping a few feet of distance from the woman in front of them.
Colleen knew Judy would be terrified and tried to keep that worry out of her mind. She had to have a clear head if she was going to be any use in getting them all out of this mess.
Whatever this mess is.
The stairs ended at the front door of the house. To their right was a large sitting room with an upright piano against the far wall, a large picture window with the curtains drawn, two large chairs and a couch with crocheted afghans thrown over the backs and arms. A grandfather clock ticked next to the piano and a low coffee table sat in the middle of the room. The floorboards were well worn and shone in the lamp light, with more homemade rugs scattered about.
To left, where the woman led them, was a spacious dining area with a long wooden table and eight simple wooden chairs around it. A cuckoo clock ticked on the wall, intricate markings etched into the wood. A sideboard with gleaming blue and white dishes was against one wall and across from it was another sideboard that Colleen imagined was used to place food during a meal. Behind the table was another wide window, with curtains also drawn.
In the center of the table was a large lamp, and salt and pepper shakers. A woman with a long gray braid and bright blue eyes sat at the table, her weathered hands around a blue mug of steaming tea.
"Madam Mayor," the woman said. "I've brought the visitors."
The woman lifted her eyes to Colleen and Karen, a tense smile on her face.
"Please, sit. I'm sure you're hungry. Margaret, would you get them some sandwiches, please?"
The woman nodded and disappeared into the kitchen.
Colleen and Karen stood, staring around them.
"Would you like tea or coffee?" the mayor asked, as if this situation wasn't at all strange.
"I want to know where Judy is," Colleen said.
"Ah yes, the girl with the collar," the mayor said, an edge to her voice. "She's sleeping upstairs."
Colleen and Karen looked at each other.
"She's here and you didn't tell us?" Karen said.
The mayor held out her hands to calm them. "Please, just sit and let us have a chat. There's a lot to discuss."
They each took a seat across from the mayor, who opened her mouth to speak when the door behind Karen and Colleen opened and out came Margaret with two plates, which she put before them.
