It’s dark now. I reach over to wake Silver for our rescue mission, but before my hand touches her, something hard presses against the back of my head.

I don’t move, and even though I want to see the face behind the gun or make Silver open her eyes, I keep still and silent.

“Slowly stand up. Be quiet,” a deep voice orders.

I don’t have much choice. My .45 is beside my leg, against the ground. Unable to make a promising move for it, I leave it there as I stand up.

I hear him stepping backwards, the pressure relieved from the back of my head as he puts space between us. “Turn around.”

When I do, it’s not what I expect. I thought I’d see someone in a dark uniform, symbolizing him as a soldier or guard of the Supremacy. He’s about my age and wears normal clothes – a blue sleeveless shirt and some ripped shorts. He must be a scout. And at least a little cold.

“Not too smart setting up camp beside a district,” he tells me.

“Does this look like a campsite to you?” I ask, and when I don’t get an answer, I go on, “Not too smart scouting for people this close to a district, either, don’t ya think?”

He raises a bushy eyebrow. “Scouting?” He shakes his head, his short, thick, dark hair brushing to the side as he does. “I’m not one of those losers.”

“Who comes out here to steal then? Aren’t you afraid of getting caught?” I ask, figuring he must be another survivor, but one too stupid to stay alive for much longer.

He makes a face like he’s proud I have no clue who he is or what he’s up to. Then his expression changes. “Being honest here, I’d rather not have to turn you in, but if they find out I let you go, it’s the end of the road for me.”

I look around. There’s no one else. “They won’t know. No one is out here.” I look him over. “Are you a recruit?” I ask, wondering if he’s a spy like Kellen was.

“I’m a recruit.” He nods. And something in the way he regretfully answers, I come to the conclusion that he’d much rather be free. He shows his arm. There’s a branding on his forearm – a crane. Each district has its own branding.

“Why don’t you leave? You go free, and we’ll stay free.”

He shakes his head. “I’m in this position of trust for a reason. You must have heard what happens to recruits who escape. Supremacy, Alliance, doesn’t matter. Once you’re in, you’re in. Unless you want to die sooner. At least staying, there’s a fighting chance.” He looks over my shoulder toward Silver. “Come on. I’ve got you. You’re done. I’m sorry.”

I’ve gotten this close. There’s no way I’m giving up now. I didn’t come all this way to be trapped with Natalie. I came to get her out.

“Don’t do this,” I plead, hating the way begging feels.

“I’ve got people I need to keep safe.
