CHAPTER 9:

ZANE NUTRITION

Once there was a man who had an enormously large stomach and ate everything in sight. One day he could find nothing to eat and, suffering so much, he sought help from a wise man who told him: "Contemplate that your stomach is as empty as the sky. Let the fire burn as when you are hungry. Let all the visible world be edible and drinkable. And let it be consumed as you eat it." The hungry man meditated with such devotion that the sun and moon hid themselves. So the wise man said, you have eaten all the food; now meditate without it." So the hungry man did. The sun and moon reappeared and he realized the integration of appearances and emptiness. No longer hungry, the man attained great power, reduced his stomach, and inspired many people. (1)

Obesity is a challenge that confronts many aging people as their basal metabolism slows down. In my years of working with overweight clients, I've noticed one thing they all seem to have in common is "binge eating". Ingesting large amounts of high caloric junk food is how many people cope with stress. Whereas they may have gotten away with this when they were younger, this unchecked bad habit has now become out of control and has resulted in the middle age spread. Instead of dealing directly with the problem that is producing the stress, they unconsciously deal with their unpleasant emotions and pacify being fed up by eating to excess. Reducing stress in this matter is called emotionally focused coping and is also a reason why people drink alcohol excessively. Drowning unpleasant emotions starts as a form of coping with stress and develops into a full blown habit. Moderate drinkers who consume one or two drinks a day claim it relaxes them and gives them pleasure, but as consumption escalates, a tolerance to alcohol develops and many of these people drink just to feel normal. The excess calories which are quickly ingested, play havoc with their blood sugar levels and metabolism and result in excess body fat. While alcohol in moderation improves beneficial cholesterol levels (HDL) and seems to stimulate the appetite especially for meat, alcoholic beverages should be avoided by those who desire to lose weight. The addictive nature of alcohol make it a substance that is easily abused. Basal metabolism--the energy output required to keep heart, lungs, and brain functioning--slows with age. Men and women over 50 need at least 300 fewer daily calories than people in their early twenties to maintain the same bodyweight. Undernutrition without malnutrition can be the most important aspect of dietary modulation of lifespan. In such a regimen, the total intake of calories is limited but there is no lack of essential nutrients like amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids (2). However, there's no need to starve yourself when you engage in a regular program of vigorous exercise. What's needed is a limited caloric intake that is nutritionally dense. Recommended dietary
