“I did warn you,” Draven said as he guided the flyer south toward the research center.

Azziani was squirming in his seat, his pretty face contorted in pain. “Just… get us… the fuck… outta here…” he spit out.

“If you had let me take the time to stop in Medical, we could have grabbed some Drexavin for you,” Draven added helpfully. He kept his eyes fixed on the windscreen so he didn’t have to think about how much the man beside him looked like Miko.

Draven didn’t like Azziani, but letting him suffer needlessly would be petty, and he’d always prided himself on being above that sort of thing. He took the fastest route out of the mountains, but it was still a good twenty minutes before Azziani relaxed enough to shoot a glare at him, followed by an accusatory, “You knew that would happen.”

“And I told you—”

“Yeah, yeah, I know.” Azziani rubbed his face with his hands. “Jesus. How do you stand it out here?”

“I don’t come out here if I can help it.” Draven turned to look at him. “Did you pick up any sign of Dominick?”

“Yeah, he’s out there.” Azziani waved his hand behind them in the direction of the mountains. “Somewhere.”

“Somewhere?”

“I couldn’t get a fix on him. His thread runs into a big, noisy mess, and I can’t follow it. The closer we got, the harder it was to keep track of where it was. And the more it hurt.”

“He’s alive, though?” Draven pressed.

“If he was dead, I wouldn’t sense him at all.”

“Not at all? No echoes? No trace in the Pattern?”

Azziani gave him an odd look. “Echoes? Pattern? You been smoking Dominick’s stash?”

Draven didn’t answer. If he’d needed more proof that Azziani was nothing like Miko, there it was.

“Guess that means I’ll be heading back out tonight.” Azziani glanced back toward the mountains and shuddered. “Probably be back here in a week or ten days with a search-and-rescue crew.”

“You’re coming back?”

Azziani gave him a sour look. “I won’t have a choice. I’m Romani’s bloodhound. If I don’t find him, it’s my fucking reputation, isn’t it?”

And quite possibly his job and his life, if Romani were annoyed enough. Draven knew exactly how Azziani felt, but the last thing he was going to do was share sob stories with Miko’s twin.

After a long silence, Azziani stirred and said, “It’s a good sign, that I’m still picking him up. It’s been, what, two weeks since he disappeared?”

“Two weeks today,” Draven murmured. Fourteen endless days, in which he’d had little to do but go over all the ways in which he’d completely fucked things up with Dominick. And try not to think about all the things his employer might decide to do about it.

“If he made it that long, he can make it another ten days or so,” Azziani said with forced cheer. “I hope.”

“I’m impressed that you could tell he was alive all the way from Earth,” Draven said, curious about Azziani’s psionic abilities in spite of himself.

“Yeah. That’s
