The final day
Cross-legged in a circle of stones on the edge of a great cliff, Teo looked out at an ocean that seemed to boil. Finished only a short time before, the crudely carved rocks were a mere shadow of Olo’s great temple, yet they still made Teo feel at home.
Living among the peoples of Red Myha for two seasons now, the last remaining ancient of Crescent City had earned their trust and was allowed to wander on her own. Though frail, withered, and in meditation more than out, she had risen in their tribe to occupy a place of high esteem. Passing onto them her vast wealth of knowledge and expertise, she used Olo’s teachings to reveal the skills of second sight and journeying. At the heart of an awakening, she worked with the eager Mystic to educate and inform the growing tribe.
As a result, the peoples of Red Myha were existing in an age of plenty. Farming, animal husbandry, and art were taking root in ways that reflected the optimism of the times. Among the most enthusiastic students Teo’s had, Tiber in particular embraced all that she said and did, becoming almost a surrogate son. As if repaying his debt of violence with peace, he took it upon himself to be not only Teo’s student, but her caregiver as well. On days when she was too weak to leave her cave from the same fever that had finally killed the other Ancients, he would sit with her in silence, staring as she did into the world beyond sight.
Today, however, Teo was alone with her thoughts save for Remus and Romulus who never left her side. Waking before young Tiber, she had left their cave quietly, feeling in her bones that the end was near.
Only a little clouded by the confusion of fever, she had made her way to the temple Watch Stones where she now sat, meditating deeply.
Lost among the countless lights that stretched out before her like the order of the universe, Teo drifted. Passing the realms of planets and suns, she wandered further into the textures of the known and unknown, finding between them a middle ground wherein all things were possible.
Greeted by windows into other places and other times, she witnessed such wonders as she never could have imagined. Fluid in their tracks, time and space joined one another, becoming a single entity that was alive and conscious.
Wishing to stay in this place forever, Teo yet felt a dark shadow falling across her soul.
As a storm built in the skies above Mars, so too did this shadow—this catastrophe not yet arrived. Dampening the ecstasy of her revelation, it slowly began blocking off Teo’s view of the quantum endlessness, robbing her of her second sight.
Opening her eyes sadly, she raised them to the heavens, holding them there for a moment. Eclipsed with a solid sheen of red, the Sun offered no comfort, its pain and rage written clearly in the flames that consumed it.
Sighing, Teo dropped her gaze until it rested upon the brothers Remus and Romulus.
