Chapter 34

Yasiv left SLH Investigations more confident than ever that Beckett was a murderer. And now, he was also certain that Captain Loomis had been one of the doctor’s victims.

Back in his office, Yasiv printed out a picture of the Captain and added it to the board with the others. He was in the process of drawing a line to Beckett’s face when Detective Gabba burst in.

“You’re not gonna believe this,” the man said excitedly, holding a laptop in his arms.

“Believe what?”

“I found it… what you asked for.”

It was almost as if the man was surprised that he’d been given a task and had actually completed it. Under normal circumstances, Yasiv would have been concerned by this, but the entire case had transcended normal a long time ago.

“Show me.”

The detective turned the computer around and clicked play.

“I found a video of Dr. Campbell at Reverend Cameron’s parish. Not only that but—”

“Shh,” Yasiv hushed him as he tried to focus on the laptop. At first, all he saw was a crowd of people, but eventually, the camera zoomed in on two in particular: Reverend Cameron and Dr. Beckett Campbell.

By the time the video was over, Yasiv’s jaw was on the floor.

“Play it again,” he said dryly.

“I know, it’s fucked up. Weird—”

“Just play it again!”

Detective Gabba did as he was asked, but the video didn’t become any less amazing the second time around. In it, Yasiv saw Beckett on his knees with the Reverend hovering over him. With more than two dozen parishioners gathered around, the man of the cloth reached out and touched Beckett’s forehead. Instantly, the doctor’s eyes rolled back, and he started to tremble. Reverend Cameron’s fingers tensed, and then Beckett began speaking in tongues. Although it was a convincing show, it was clear that Beckett was just mocking the man.

Up until the last few seconds of video, that is.

All of a sudden, Beckett’s jaw clenched, and his lids started to droop. Then he collapsed in a heap on the church floor.

“Any idea what he’s saying?” Yasiv asked after several silent moments.

Gabba shrugged.

“No idea. Mostly nonsense with a few choice words sprinkled in.”

“Play it once more, would you?”

Gabba nodded and clicked play. This time, however, nothing happened.

“That’s weird.”

The detective spun the laptop around and started to attack his keyboard.

“What’s wrong?”

“I dunno… the video’s gone—says that it’s been taken down.”

“What? What do you mean?”

“Yeah, says here that it’s been flagged for… what the fuck? Inappropriate gender pronouns?”

Yasiv squeezed his eyes closed.

What in God’s name is happening?

“Can you get it back?” he asked.

“I’m not sure. I can try.”

“Alright, you do that, and while you’re at it, try to find more links between the Reverend and Dr. Campbell.”

Detective Gabba looked up at him then, a question on his tongue.

“What? What is it?”

The detective took a deep breath.

“Well, it’s just that there are some rumors going around about the DA wanting to pull the plug on this whole thing? I just want to make sure that everything is—”

Yasiv felt his ears grow hot.

The fucking leak… the goddamn leak in my department.
