Kamryn jumped from the chair beside Rich’s hospital bed and stumbled back.

“I’m sorry, but it’s true.” Guilt suffused his expression. “I should’ve told you a long time ago, and I’ll regret that for the rest of my life. The way I regret pulling away from your mom when she needed me.”

Kamryn ignored Maggie’s stare. The woman seemed as confused as she was about everything Rich had told them. She dragged open the door and rushed out to almost collide with Brett. “I need to get out of here.”

He didn’t ask any questions. He only nodded, and glanced at the room where she’d been.

Instead of him, it was his mom who said, “I’d like to come with you if that’s okay.”

Kamryn turned to meet Maggie’s stare and read something in her expression. As if maybe there was more Maggie wanted to tell her.

Kamryn nodded.

Brett spoke then. “Let’s go. But we’ll be informing Conroy of our whereabouts, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a police car shows up wherever we go.”

Conroy nodded. “It would be good if you’re not surprised.”

Kamryn was too consumed with everything Rich had said to be able to respond. Except to say, “Can you have Mia text me? I want to talk to her.”

Conroy frowned a fraction. “I can.”

“It’s nothing bad. Just about what her dad said.”

She could barely get the words out in a coherent manner. Why had he never told her, even before she’d left town? That and so many other questions rolled through her mind like a checklist prior to takeoff.

They headed to the elevator and down to where he left the car. All the while his mom walked quietly behind them. Brett glanced at her, but neither of them said anything. He held the car door for her and closed it after she’d pulled her legs in.

She sat in silence as he did the same for his mom, and then rounded the front of the car.

As he turned the engine on, he glanced over. “Where are we headed?”

She said the first thing that came to mind. “My dad’s house.” It made sense that she look through everything there. “That’s where I want to go. My dad’s house.”

For a long time, she hadn’t thought of it as her childhood home. Or any place she associated with family. Now she knew exactly how warped that situation had been she wanted to destroy the place. Take what she wanted first, and then break everything in the house. Smash it. Get a sledge hammer and start swinging. Probably before she set fire to the whole place.

Her dad and her brother were dead, though. So what would that solve? It probably wouldn’t even make her feel better.

That was the worst of it. That they’d left her with nothing good.

She didn’t want to think it, but it was likely they’d also left her with no way of finding out what happened when she was four.

“Mom?” Brett said.

Maggie took a minute before she answered. “Yes, honey?”

Just hearing a woman she’d always admired use an endearment for someone she cared about like that made her ache.
