The practice of silence isnât about removing all the excess sounds from our lives as much as itâs about removing the excess distractions that pull our attention away from God. Through silence we accept the invitation to just be with God. Silence provides the opportunity for reflection and contemplation, and in silence we have the comfort of praying without even using words, communicating with God by simply enjoying His presence and knowing He is near.
In silence, we give time for God to speak and for us to respond. Prayers naturally arise from our lips and hearts. The words of the Bible come alive in a whole new way. In silence. we create space to enjoy Godâs presence and adhere to the words of the psalmist, âBe still, and know that I am Godâ (Psalm 46:10).
1. Describe a time when you have felt close to God without saying anything at all. What was most striking about the experience?
[Your Response]
2. Silence stands in stark contrast to the noise of everyday life. Set a timer for five minutes and enter a time of deliberate silence to seek God. What stirred in your heart during this time of silence?
[Your Response]
3. When you approach God in prayer, what percentage of time do you give to speaking versus listening? What makes giving time to listen to God so challenging?
[Your Response]
Psalm 131 is a Song of Ascents written by King Davidâpart of a series of psalms that exalt and praise God. Scholars believe that Jewish priests would recite these psalms as they walked the steps into the inner courtyard of the temple as a way to prepare their hearts to meet with God. Other scholars believe these songs were sung as people made a pilgrimage into Jerusalem, the Holy City.
4. Read Psalm 131:1â2. What are some of the challenges you face when you try to quiet your soul?
[Your Response]
5. What are some effective ways youâve found to respond to the distractions you sense when practicing silence?
[Your Response]
When we pause our lives and silence our voices, we make room for God to speak. However, sometimes God doesnât speak as quickly, loudly, or clearly as we would like. In times of silence, we may find ourselves simply waiting on God.
6. On the continuum below, mark how well you feel that you wait on the Lord.
