BOULEVARD AUGUSTE-BLANQU!

98 • Residence of Hadley Hemingway

In the autumn of 1927, after her divorce from Ernest and her brief residence near Gertrude Stein on rue de Fleurus, Hadley and her son, John, moved to a sixth-floor flat here, near the intersection with rue de la Glacière. American architect Paul Nelson, who designed the Lille Hospital, had a penthouse studio here.

The Hemingways’ son, John, grew up to be called Jack; at the time, however, he was still known affectionately as Bumby. At preschool age, he played with his neighbor Julie Bowen, the daughter of Stella Bowen and Ford Madox Ford. And a frequent baby-sitter was Hadley’s friend, Manuel Komroff, the future editor and Esquire writer. In addition to these friends, Hadley and Bumby often visited Mr. and Mrs. John Gunther, who were living at the time in a flat adjacent to the Pare Montsouris.
