“She’s waking up.”

I couldn’t identify the voice. In fairness, I might have been able to if the ringing in my head had been something less than a dull roar. As it was, I was amazed I could make out the words at all.

“Get Doctor Chapel.”

This was someone I recognized. It was Major Boseman. It would take a lot more than a splitting headache to disguise Chad’s deep baritone voice.

I felt a hypospray press against my neck. Almost immediately the painful noise associated with my headache disappeared.

I realized I was wrapped in blankets and resting in a hospital bed. I recognized the room. It was part of the suite I had occupied when I had been recovering from a wound that had cost me my leg… at least until the cloned replacement was ready for transplant.

I wondered idly whether or not I got frequent flier miles for all the time I spent in this particular medical facility. By the way, for those of you who are curious, don’t ask me what frequent flyer miles are. It has something to do with a type of antique aircraft called an airplane. It was something my mom used to say. I suspect she heard it from her mom who her it from her mom, and so on and so on. I’m just continuing the tradition.

“Feeling better?”

The voice belonged to Janice Chapel. When I turned my head, I saw that she was the one holding the hypospray.

“If by better you mean I don’t feel like I got trampled by a herd of water buffalo on their way to a slip-and-slide water park, then the jury is still out. What the hell happened to me?”

“I just got your test results back. The short answer is you’re sick. Very sick.”

At this point, I finally realized my little room was packed. In addition to the good doctor and Chad, I was blessed by the company of Uncle Max, DeAndre, Arty, Fitzy, and finally my first officer, Matt.

“Is anybody running the ship?” I asked.

Matt shrugged his shoulders. “Steve’s on the bridge. I’m sure he has a handle on things.”

“You’ve left the ship’s youngest ensign in charge?”

“Of course not,” Matt protested. “Lieutenant Crusher is there mentoring.”

I groaned. “Tell me they’re not making moonshine. I’ll take another one of those joy juice shots, doc.”

“Sorry. One per customer, Admiral.”

“So, I’m sick, but I take it I’m not especially contagious given the current crowd of well-wishers.”

“Well-wishers?” Fitzy asked innocently.

I raised an eyebrow. “You’re not here as well-wishers?”

My daughter paused for a moment and cocked her head sideways as if thinking.

“Sure,” she said with a smirk. “We can go with well-wishers… yeah, yeah why not? Well-wishers it is then.”

I snorted. “I love you too, dearest.”

“In answer to your question,” Janice interrupted with a scolding look at my daughter, “you are not contagious. As far as I can tell, you are the only one who is infected.”

“That’s good to hear,” I said. “What’s the prognosis? When will I be back on my feet?”

Janice looked at me with unmistakable concern.
