EIGHTH MAXIM:

We’re All World Citizens in the Boneyard

It’s delusional to think that land, indifferent nature, could yearn for a people the way a people yearn for the land. And yet, there’s a case for just that, even if it’s a kind of collective delusion. Visit some of the other sad, beautiful places of the world, where a people have been decimated and/or displaced, Tasmania or the Cathar country of Southern France, which once held populations of aboriginals and Albigensians, respectively, and try to see the land as similar to any other land. Even if you didn’t know the land’s history … but let’s stop there. It’s ridiculous. You do know its history and that’s the point. And so you can’t help but think that the land’s emptied castles, its very hills and streams, yearn for someone else. Perhaps it would have been better if you’d never read Chief Seattle’s famous speech:
