Learn how to focus by finding your ideal arousal state

The final attribute that you’ll need to learn to achieve mental toughness is focus. This is a person’s ability to remain consistent, executing plans and solutions without distraction. While it’s impossible to ignore all distractions, your focus should allow you to perform in spite of those distractions. One of the best ways to combat any diversions and increase your focus is to find your “ideal arousal state,” and do your best to remain in that state.

“Arousal” is the stimulation of your nerves and emotions. When something happens that you have a major reaction to, your arousal increases. When you don’t react at all, it decreases. This is where your ideal arousal state, or IAS, comes into play. In this state, your levels of stimulation are perfectly appropriate for what is going on and allow you to perform at your optimum level. When you use an IAS to control your emotions, you can make sure you’re always reacting appropriately to any situation or distraction. If you can learn to control your levels of arousal, you’ll find it much easier to focus and flourish on the task you have at hand.

You should try to identify your ideal arousal states for certain situations key to achieving your product goals. To do this, think about times that you have performed really well on certain tasks, and assess on a scale of 1 to 10 how stimulated you were. This will vary according to the task, but will usually be somewhere in the midrange. For example, when presenting to a group, your IAS may be around a 7, as you need to be energetic; whereas if you’re focusing on creating spreadsheets, this requires more concentration, so your IAS is more likely to be a 4. Once you’ve identified a number, this is your ideal state for that situation.

Now that you know your IAS for varying situations, you can prepare for those situations ahead of time. If you need to increase your arousal state for a presentation, try exercising beforehand, or visualizing a past experience in which you were animated and enthused. If you need to lower it, try focusing on a past experience of low arousal, or breathe slowly and deeply for a few minutes.

Maintaining an ideal arousal state for all situations will allow you to stay focused and perform optimally. Learn how to increase and decrease your current arousal state, for a powerful, focused mind, one that will provide you with mental toughness.
