AFTER THE MEETING WAS over, Mr. Toler guided them out of the room into the elevator. They entered a floor with plush rugs and more hospitable surroundings. The walls were painted a beige color with paintings of Renaissance masters such as Leonardo and Raphael. Del had seen a special on a Renaissance painters before while he was drunk.
Mr. Toler told them this whole floor was for themselves and each of them had different rooms. There was also a space in the middle called the main headquarter with computers, drinks, an oven and a fridge.
Mr. Toler said, âGo ahead and call your friends and family on your phones.â
Mr. Tovar left them alone. They sat in the Headquarters room. They all went toward their prospective rooms. Del looked at his bedroom and it was more spacious than his motel room.
On the small table next to the queen size bed was a clock radio. He also saw a set of drawers, a door to a closet and a table and chairs. He sat on his bed. He took out his phone from his jeans pocket.
Del was about to call his dad but he decided to check his room. Mr. Tolerâs goons had pack all his stuff, but he wondered if they found his laptop underneath his bed. For a few minutes, he checked his room and all he found was his clothes, his shaver and toiletries, but he didnât find his laptop.
He took out his phone saw several unopened messages. He saw one was from his exwife, Marion, his dad and Mom. He placed his phone on the nightstand and plugged it in. The phone needed to charge. Heâll make the calls later.
Clicking on the remote control, he channeled surfed on the big screen TV. Del could get used to these luxuries. The bed was soft and not lumpy. The TV had hundreds of channels. They had the best cable available - HBO, Showtime and the History Channel.
His mind couldnât concentrate on any of the shows. He was scared and excited at the same time. Del walked toward the Headquarters room. He wanted a soda. He was surprised that he didnât crave any alcohol. It has been hours since he took the magical pill.
Del walked into the large room. He turned toward the refrigerator. He grabbed a diet soda and then sat on a chair. Sipping his drink, he saw the room was equipped with several computers. Gabrielle walked inside. She looked flustered. She grabbed a drink from the fridge and sat next to him.
She said, âDid they resort to blackmail to get you here?â
Del looked at her and didnât know what to say. It was if she was reading his mind and knew about how his life had been a bad cluster fuck.
He said, âHow do you know this? Did they blackmail you?â
She nodded to the security camera attached to the wall. âI donât care what they hear. They know why Iâm here.â She whispered under her breath, âBastards.â
Del sipped his soda. He told her an abbreviated version of what had happened to him for the last few days.
