Hiring managers who simply hand off searches to a recruiting partner show that they don’t want to be involved in their own hiring process. Either they don’t believe there is intense competition for the talent they’re seeking, or if they do believe there is, then they are showing through their lack of involvement that finding the best talent is not a priority for them, regardless of what they say. In either case, you’re unlikely to find strong talent if they stay unengaged with the search.
In an interview with Netflix’s Patty McCord, she told me that she would reassign her recruiters to other parts of the business if they were not getting the partnership needed from hiring managers. “Many hiring managers would get upset at me, but I would tell them that I had many other hiring managers that would be delighted to provide the partnership we needed to help them be successful. I made it clear to hands-off or disengaged hiring managers that I couldn’t afford to spend twice as much of my recruiters’ time to achieve half the results for them as for their peers who were engaged in their own searches.”
Hiring managers who ask for stellar candidates but neglect to partner up with their talent acquisition team remind me of one of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G episodes. Ali G pitches his brilliant idea to produce hoverboards modeled on those in Back to the Future to a venture capital investor. When the investor asks how this product will technically work, Ali G behaves like the classic “idea guy,” telling the VC investor that his contribution to the partnership will be to solve these little technical details: “That’s where you lot come in! You come up with the science.”
