Chapter 14
Unfortunately, even Paolo couldn’t keep away the Sabrina dreams that night. After waking up from a nightmare that she’d gone for my knee, Tonya Harding style, I was back in the kitchen surrounded by the items needed for banana bread and trying to keep my anxiety at bay. There was something about whipping the ingredients into shape with a wooden spoon that was almost as satisfying and happy-making as kneading dough.
When I’d left the Italian bread out on the counter, it hadn’t lasted long. I knew our floor had more than dancers on it—there were some summer interns who wore company polos when we passed them on the stairs in the mornings, and some guys who were probably musicians or actors judging by the hours they kept. I didn’t know who had chowed down on my gift, but I assumed they’d enjoyed it based on how fast it disappeared.
I left the banana bread out as well, with another Alice in Wonderland-style “eat me” note. When I was finishing wrapping my hair up in a bun on top of my head before leaving for rehearsal, Charlotte, who I assumed had gone out to get a coffee, came sauntering back in the room with her mouth full like a chipmunk.
“Good breakfast?” I asked, as she swallowed.
“Yes, the carb fairy left something delicious for us. Banana bread. It just appeared in the kitchen, like magic. This is the second time, actually,” she said, her mouth still stuffed. “There’s a little bit left, but you should probably run if you want some. Arden came in after me and she was definitely headed for the knives.”
I laughed. “So do you think I should get a pair of wings to wear when I bake then? Maybe a crown of fresh flowers?”
Charlotte’s eyes doubled in size and her mouth dropped open. I was glad she’d finished her bite. “You’re the carb fairy?”
“If you mean the girl who stress bakes, then yes. I was thinking about sourdough or honey oatmeal next. Do you have a preference?”
Charlotte smacked herself on the forehead. “You told us you bake on the first day of rehearsal. I should’ve put two and two together. And did you say stress bake? Are you okay? How are you stressed after you had such a great night?”
When I’d gotten home last night, I’d dished to Charlotte, no doubt with actual stars in my eyes, about how well things had gone with Paolo. Remembering how freeing it had felt to tell him about Sabrina, I decided to go all in and tell Charlotte too. “So you know how Sabrina is kind of mean?”
“Kind of? She’s a lot of other four letter words, my friend. Mean is tame.”
“I’m trying to be diplomatic.”
“Fine. Continue.”
I told her everything, starting with the day I’d gone to Union Square by myself and seen Sabrina a second time and leading up through my online discoveries. And then I told her about Sabrina’s blackmail, how she tripped me the day I fell after rehearsal, and what I suspected about my socks.
