Not waiting for a reply, I buried my head under the covers, soaking up the last of the heat, and fell back asleep until my alarm startled me awake twenty minutes later.

Daisy and I scrambled to get dressed and were running through the halls, praying we wouldn’t be late. Mr. Walker, our Design Studio instructor, was not one for tardiness any more than he enjoyed using nicknames.

I slid to a stop at the doors and pulled one open just as the bell rang. Andrew sat to the side of the large room at a table long enough for the three of us. We quietly walked over as Mr. Walker stood at the front, rolling and unrolling a tape measure.

With a deliberate slowness he turned to look at us. “Glad you could join us, ladies.”

My eyes darted to Daisy’s. She just rolled hers as Walker began his lecture.

“All right class, now that we’re all assembled, we have a special treat for all our studio students this term. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to the Duchess of Westminster, Evangeline Gray. She’s with us today to share an exciting opportunity.”

From the front row of the class a tall, redheaded girl stood. She walked up, looking poised and polished, and turned to us with a smile.

How is she old enough to be a duchess?

“Hello, everyone.”

She’s an American? And she’s a duchess here? How does that even work?

“I’m so excited to be here with you all today. I’m actually skipping a few of my classes so that I can. But that’ll be our little secret.” She leaned against the front table and I felt a pang of jealousy for how at ease she looked in front of a room of people. I’d be a shaking, stuttering mess.

“I’m here because I have the pleasure of attending a gala in December. It’s for a charity I work with, the Westminster Wildlife Foundation. It raises awareness and money for endangered species.”

Daisy leaned into me as the duchess ran through a list of animals on the brink of extinction. “I’d kill for her hair.”

“Those curls,” I whispered back. They were the perfectly soft and wavy kind. My short brown hair had a slight wave to it, which only succeeded in making it look messy and kinky.

She nodded and softly added, “The color. Those highlights.”

“So, it’s my intention to pick one of you to design my gown for the event. Both first- and second-year students can enter. There are a few things you need to keep in mind. I’d like it to be a full-length gown as it’ll be pretty chilly then.”

It was November now, which meant we didn’t have much time to pull this off. I started scribbling her list on a piece of scrap paper I pulled from my bag.

“The charity’s colors are blue and yellow, so if you can incorporate them it’d be wonderful. Sadly, I’m not an animal print person.” She chuckled. “And if at all possible, make it comfortable; I’ll be in your fabulous creation for hours.
