Fourteen

Mom and I settled onto the couch in my living room, the basket of clues on the coffee table in front of us, and Freddie sitting in a chair across the room, as if supervising.

I carefully removed each item, laying them out like pieces of a puzzle. She donned a pair of cat-eye, electric blue reading glasses and scrutinized everything.

“I have to admit, this is pretty exciting,” Mom said, leaning forward to examine the dice. “It's like we're in one of those true crime documentaries.”

I couldn't help but smile. “You watch those?”

“All the time. Hal jokes I’m learning how to kill people.”

I snickered. This was a side of her I rarely, if ever, saw. “Okay, so here's what we have.”

I walked her through each clue. I explained the significance of the library book with the hidden bone and my vision of Marigold's final moments.

Mom's eyes widened in horror as I recounted the details. “Oh, honey. That must have been so frightening for you.”

I nodded, swallowing hard. “It was. But it also made me really want to figure out what happened to her. That’s the thing about these cases. I feel this sense of justice, like I might be the only one who can right some wrongs. Is that bad?”

Mom shook her head. “A little dangerous, perhaps, and maybe not best for your mental health, but not bad.”

As we pored over the items, Mom picked up the mixtape case and studied the writing on the sticker pasted to the front. “Songs From the Edge of Forever,” she read aloud. “You used to name your cassettes, too.”

She fiddled with the case, opening it and taking out the flimsy, folded insert. That was blank, and Mom unfolded the heavy paper.

“What’s this?” Mom said. “Did you see this? There’s something inside here.”

She picked at it with her fingernail. Suddenly, a slip of paper fluttered from the case.

I picked it up. The paper was square, about two inches high. It was a newspaper clipping, yellowed with age and only two paragraphs. The number 1992 was written in tiny handwriting, in blue ink, at the top.

The headline read: “Cypress Grove Woman Stirs Controversy.”

Esmerelda “Esmee” Blackthorn, a self-proclaimed witch and prominent figure in Cypress Grove's magical community, has once again found herself at the center of a heated debate. Known for her unconventional practices and outspoken nature, Blackthorn has often clashed with the town's more traditional covens.

“Esmeralda's methods are unorthodox and dangerous,” said an anonymous source within the Wiccan community. “She's pushing the boundaries of what's acceptable, and it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.” Blackthorn, however, remains defiant in the face of criticism. “I refuse to be bound by the narrow-minded views of the past,” she declared in a recent interview. “Magic is about embracing change and pushing limits. If that makes some people uncomfortable, so be it.”

“Huh.” I reread the little article, wondering if there was more to it. Then I closed my eyes and held it in my palm, hoping to inspire a vision.
