Forgiven people forgive. I pray that as you read this, God will give you the courage to do whatâs rightâeven if itâs hard.
Chapter Nine
Back off that Ledge
This chapter is not about basketball.
In the year 2010, the NBA basketball world was set on fire. Lebron James and Chris Bosh were joining Dwayne Wade on the Miami Heat. Sportswriters went crazy. Today people focus on Lebronâs statement of winning ânot 5, not 6, not 7â championships, but the media was saying the same thing. I remember reading articles about how this Miami team was going to challenge Michael Jordanâs Chicago Bullâs record of 72 wins. Well, that first season didnât go as planned. At one point, the Miami Heat had a 8 and 7 record. They had lost three straight. You would have thought that the world was over. Sports writers were panicking. This team wasnât supposed to lose. The problem is that the NBA season equals 82 games. The Miami Heat went on to the Finals that year to face the Dallas Mavericks. When the Heat lost the Finals, the sports world jumped on the ledge once again. They treated Lebron like he was a criminal who had stolen their hopes and dreams. They talked about blowing up the team and starting over.
Most of us live out on the ledge. We panic too quickly. We rush to conclusions. We climb out the window, stand on the ledge, and threaten to jump because life is just too bad. I have been there. The media lives there. They are all too quick to jump on the ledge and declare that itâs the end of the world.
When someone tells you that you have been talked about, itâs easy to want to jump out onto the ledge. Itâs easy to want to assume the worst and get yourself worked up into a tizzy. Problems are never solved on the ledge. Itâs time to take a deep breath and climb back inside.
The problem is that most of the things we freak out about arenât really that big of a deal. In fact, most of the things we worry about never happen. Think about itâ¦what was the last thing you worried about? Most of the time, there are hypothetical worries that consume us. What if she leaves? What if they donât like me? What if I lose my job? What if I fail? We create scenarios and then freak out about them. We create drama because we forget that the outcome hasnât been written.
An Out of Whack Perception
Whenever Iâm on the ledge, it is a clear picture that my perception is out of whack. It shows that Iâm overestimating my problem and underestimating my God. I over estimate how bad things really are or will be, and I underestimate an all-powerful being. The God who parted the Red Sea, helped a shepherd boy slay a giant, and even raised the dead is the same God who can handle our situation. What are you freaking out about? Take a deep breath, and back off that ledge.
