Geneva

SWITZERLAND

Your first Swiss stop is Geneva, the country’s cultural capital. There’s no way you can tick off all of the city’s 82 heritage sites, even if you stayed here for several days. The two must-visits are the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, where artists explore how humanitarian action affects us all in rotating temporary exhibitions; and St Pierre Cathedral, the adopted church of John Calvin, leader of the Protestant Reformation.

It’s because of Calvin’s links with the city that Geneva was called the Protestant Rome from the 16th to 20th centuries. Although the church has since dimmed in importance, the cathedral still dominates the Old Town. Set on the southern bank of the Rhône, this area is an evocative place to explore, with its secret passageways and cobbled squares. Give yourself several hours, stopping for a glass of wine or generous portion of raclette as you go.

Services between Geneva and Zermatt are incredibly frequent: at rush hour they depart every 10 minutes.

DETOUR

Fribourg

Gruyère, the slightly salty Alpine cheese used to make fondue, comes from the Swiss canton of Fribourg. A short 90-minute train ride from Geneva, Fribourg town is full of dairies, cheesemongers and restaurants serving up the freshest fondue you’ve ever eaten.
