Train/Ferry Connections to Other Base Cities from Athens (Athinai)

Depart Athens Larissa Station by train to Patras (see rail schedule in “Day Excursion to Patras” section). Depart Patras by ferry to Brindisi, Italy (see Appendix “Ferry Crossings”), and then depart Brindisi by train to the selected base city.

Tourists are targets for ploys and pranks throughout the world. Athens is no exception. A waiter may suggest that you consume bottled water with your meal. After all, you may have been warned not to drink the regular water. Bottled water is a good idea, but insist that the waiter open the bottle at your table. Otherwise, you might receive an opened bottle of water that was just recently filled from the water tap in the kitchen. Or order a bottle of carbonated water. That’s hard to bootleg!

Day Excursions

Riding a narrow-gauge train through areas steeped in the history of Western civilization is sufficiently stimulating to make the traveler overlook the lack of air-conditioning, posh dining cars, and other amenities. Our day excursion to Argos, the oldest continuously inhabited town in Greece, is one such adventure. Corinth, both modern and ancient, is rich in Greek history, from Alexander the Great down through Roman rule. Patras, port city and scene of the most spectacular carnival in Greece, is still another place to see on the Peloponnese. Piraeus, main port of Athens, provides culinary delights from the surrounding sea.

An InterCity train between Athens and Larissa provides an opportunity to spend several hours in Larissa during a day excursion out of Athens. Depart Athens at 0718, arrive in Larissa at 1118 on IC 50, and depart at 1759 on train 591 to arrive back in Athens by 2218. Or depart Larissa at 1926 on IC 61 for arrival in Athens at 2322. Although the IC 61 does not haul a restaurant car, there are beverages and some food available. Also, you will find an abundance of cafes and patisseries on the town square. Larissa, the “citadel,” is the capital of Thessaly, and for a time it was the home of Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine.
