Chapter 17

___________

Lyra

Zalantha sped ahead, dodging in and out of the cars, as we left the Mesothraxians behind. My heart was racing like crazy, and my mind couldn't cope with all these changes. Everything was getting out of hand, completely nuts.

I couldn't believe what I'd just witnessed. Three alien reptile-like monsters just abducted my best friend, who I now knew was a secret drinker. I was still struggling to comprehend how I didn't even know. I'd never seen him drink. There were no signs.

Perhaps Zalantha was right; maybe Charlie was a professional, functioning alcoholic.

Those words dug into my soul. Was that what I was as well?

Mom's face flashed in my mind, and my heart dipped. I dreaded to think what was happening to her on Mesoterra. I had to find out more from Zalantha, but I was sure he'd be reluctant to tell me.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"To the woods."

"Why the woods?"

"So we can rest and rethink."

"Will you tell me more about Mesoterra on the way, then? I want to know what's happening to my Mom."

"Trust me, you don't. Try to focus on what you can influence."

I knew it. He wasn't going to let up that easily.

"Like what?" I asked, feeling agitated

"Like keeping me company and making me smile."

I stared into his eyes and grinned nervously. He winked, smiled, and focused back on the road. I guessed I'd have to wait and be patient.

As we drove past bars with people outside sipping on cool bottles of beer and glasses of wine, my annoying, alcohol-deprived inner voice kept asking me for a drink. Part of me wanted to give in, to get sloshed and forget about the day's mental events. Perhaps after a couple of glasses of wine, I could laugh this absurd situation off. But deep down, I knew that wouldn't change anything. All that would happen is I'd have a hangover, with the same problem looming, and feel even worse.

I had to be strong and deal with this new experience, even if I was petrified.

Glancing at Zalantha, my heart lifted. He looked so cool and sophisticated driving along. I studied his muscular physique and could feel myself heating up. Maybe we could make the most of this alone time together.

After a short drive, we reached the woods, and Zalantha slowed down in a shady part by the river. Flashes of Al came to my mind, that first drink, how I'd kissed him for the first time, and how I'd made a fool of myself. I wondered whether my life would have been different had I never met him. I guessed, somewhere along the line, someone would have given me a drink to try. Perhaps it was just a matter of time.

Zalantha pulled up the handbrake and sighed with relief.

"I think we're safe now. Let's chill here and think." He leaned back and closed his eyes as if he were about to have a nap.

"Hey," I said, tapping his shoulder. "You're not sleeping now."

"Why not?"

"I thought we had to think up a way of saving my Mom.
