THE TAKE-HOME

When Barbara Sherwin launched what would be her decades-long work on menopause, hormones, and memory, she feared the media might turn her findings into simplistic advice or, worse, use them to foster the misogynistic view of postmenopausal women’s reduced cognitive abilities. Still, as she told a reporter at her home university of McGill, her goal has always been to help women live as enjoyably and productively as possible, and so she has little patience for those who dismiss HRT because it is “unnatural.” “What’s not natural is to live to 80,” she said. Women live anywhere from one-third to one-half of their lives after menopause, and if estrogen helps cognition and staves off Alzheimer’s, that is crucial information. But Sherwin has never been a “feminine forever” advocate. “Enhancing quality of life,” she said, “is not the same as getting rid of the phenomenon of aging.”78

So, to review: There are good reasons to believe that estrogen helps maintain cognitive abilities, prevents both cardiovascular disease (as we saw in chapter 3) and stroke, and reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
