Craig and Claudia Broadley left northern California in 1986 to pursue a Burgundy dream in Oregon. They started by clearing their new vineyard site of trees and junk. Planting their vines on a warm site in a cool region, they began tending their vineyard, making their wine, and sustaining themselves by being the poetry-selling arm of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights Bookstore. Their winemaking skills were validated when The Wine Spectator gave their 1994 Claudia’s Choice release one of the highest scores ever given to a domestic pinot noir.

Joined today by son Morgan and his wife Jessica, the Broadley family make artisan pinot noir full of character and complexity. Claudia’s Choice is from vines over 20 years old and has a big, earthy, leathery style with bold fruit. Marcile Lorraine has more spice and jam qualities, but is also bold and fruity. Broadley’s single-vineyard releases, especially the Shea Vineyard, display its silky, elegant side, and the Willamette Valley release is among the best pinot noir bargains in Oregon.
