Lauren returned to The Lookout, pleased to see both the Jeep and BMW in their parking slots. Daniel had returned late the previous night from several days in London, and they’d stayed up for hours, catching up on each other’s news. Hopefully, he’d be around a bit more now he’d completed his project.

As she crossed the drive, Lauren looked around, trying to see the exterior as Gerry would. Although Daniel had sent photos, the producer hadn’t been back since the landscapers moved in, and they’d done a brilliant job, laying lawns, and a gravel driveway which formed a circular sweep outside the vast stone steps up to the front door. Daniel had plans to convert a couple of sheds into garages at a later date, but for now they’d placed some bushy shrubs in huge pots around the buildings to screen them.

‘Daniel? Are you home?’

Lauren dropped her bag on the kitchen island and looked around the ground floor. He wasn’t in the snug or the study, and although the glass doors to the terrace were open, he wasn’t out there either.

Shedding her lightweight jacket, Lauren made her way upstairs. Daniel’s door was closed, so she assumed he was in there. She’d grab her book and sit outside, wait for him to come downstairs.

It wasn’t on the bedside table, and then she remembered: she’d had a long soak in the candle-lit bathroom last night as she immersed herself in the book. It did have a prevalence of sex over plot, and Lauren was enjoying it immensely, the experience enhanced by the silkiness of the bubbles and warm water caressing her skin as she read.

With a soft smile, she crossed the landing and walked into the room, only to emit a small squeak as she almost walked into Daniel’s back.
