Chapter 23

Look See

Phil’s face mirrored his concern when he spoke. “I’m not sure what to do. They’ve taken over the town, and that includes the stores in the area that folks haven’t scavenged from yet in the last six months. Now we know they’re searching the area for more places to raid and it’s just a matter of time before they find us up here.”

“Do you know the number of people over there now? Do you think they could have hostages?”

“Ben was watching when they first came down the highway and counted trucks and men in them and came up with at least eighteen, maybe twenty. He wasn’t quite sure, but we can talk to him about it again. Considering that, it could mean there are as many as a couple dozen. As for hostages, I don’t know. After the raiding in the area, it would be a good bet they have captives now, but Ben didn’t mention seeing any at the time.”

“You can bet on it if they’ve been raiding survivor camps,” Matt retorted. “Could be what they’re really looking for now.”

“Makes sense now that you say it.” Phil looked troubled. “They wouldn’t have killed all the women they come across. I hate to think of the life they’ve suffered.”

“We’d need to assume there are hostages,” Matt agreed as he rubbed at the stubble on his face.

“I don’t think a bunch of men like those would run around without women for long,” Tate snorted.

“Don’t think much of men?” Matt raised a brow.

“I agree with Tate. Men like that wouldn’t miss a chance to take women captive,” Griff announced. “It’s their nature to be abusive.”

Phil raised a hand. “We have to know if there are hostages before we take actions. Someone needs to go into town for a recon before we can do any planning.”

“You’re right. If it was just a case of killing them, we could blow up the building. If there are captives, we have to free them,” Matt agreed.

“I’ll do the recon,” Griff announced.

“Not alone,” Matt answered.

“Hey, I’m not sitting around waiting for the boys to come home,” Tate argued.

Griff raised a hand. “Only two of us are needed. We go in quiet, look around, and come back out.”

“We won’t be taking your truck. This needs to be quiet,” Matt added.

An hour before dusk, Griff and Matt gathered a few supplies in two backpacks plus machetes, knives, and handguns, for emergencies only. They dressed in black and used camouflage face paint provided by Ben from a mysterious trunk in the attic.

Both Phil and Tate watched without speaking. Matt glanced toward the two of them and could see Tate was fuming. “You may as well calm down, the fewer people that go on this little jaunt, the less chance of losing someone. Besides, if the gang attacks before we scope it out, they’ll need you here.”

“You act like I’m helpless,” She argued.

“You’re the best shot I’ve seen in a couple years. That’s exactly why you need to be here.
