Gill’s only contribution to the Guild central fund was £500 borrowed from Lord Howard de Walden. Financial control, though in theory a shared responsibility, was in reality put in the hands of Pepler, the only Guild member who was reasonably prosperous. Gill resented this. His resentment bubbled over into some notes he wrote as the background to the quarrel, by this time becoming more public and embittered. Pepler’s education and background of relative affluence had, Gill maintained, left him with ‘a sort of Manicheism’ with regard to money: because he considered it intrinsically evil all care and method in financial affairs seemed to him unnecessary, even despicable. Gill summed up Pepler’s attitude with a rather startling venom:

Everyone loves HP but hates his finance

& hates his brutal methods

his dictatorial manner

his minding other people’s business
